Recording Radio Shows With a VCR

by Ken Edmonds

If you have a stereo system and have hooked up a cassette deck - then you know how to connect a vcr to record the radio. It's exactly the same procedure. If you have the manual to your stereo there will be a diagram of the connections. If you don't know or always have trouble with the "tech stuff" then here's the method:

Basic Principles - INs connect to OUTs

The LINE OUT of the receiver (stereo) connects to the LINE IN of the VCR. If there is no LINE OUT use the TAPE MONITOR OUT or TAPE OUT to connect to the LINE IN of the VCR.

Thats IT!!!

But I'll assume you will want to play it back to listen - so then you need to connect the OUTs to the INs.

The LINE OUT of the VCR connects to the LINE IN of the receiver (stereo) If there is no LINE IN on the receiver (stereo) use the TAPE MONITOR IN or TAPE IN to connect to the LINE OUT of the VCR.

Now you may be wondering why you would want to go through all this trouble. Here's why:

  1. You can set the VCR timer to record shows when you're not there or when you're asleep. To do this you would have to leave the radio on - or you could put a timer on the radio.

  2. Did you ever want to tape that 6 hour radio special and get tired of missing parts while you switched tapes? You can use slow speed (EP) and get 6 hrs on one tape.

  3. The audio/sound quality of VCR tape is better than cassette tape. One tip - when you record on a VCR - keep the signal below the red level.

HTH - Hope this helps!
